Oceania University of Medicine (OUM) operates in Samoa in partnership
with the government. OUM provides a high quality medical education
with the use of modern, computer-assisted learning. The result is
lower costs and the opportunity to complete medical school in less
time (approximately 30%) than other medical schools, because of the
intensive year-round program.
OUM’s licensed course content
(cases, exhibits, and assessments) and software were developed
and used by medical schools in Australia
and the USA. Highly qualified tutors guide students through the
learning process, where small groups of students focus on intensive
problem
based learning (PBL), case studies.
Through the use of the latest
in online e-learning management systems, students access a vast
amount of information, instruction, and
communication in a virtual learning environment through the Internet.
Problem-based
learning integrates the basic sciences with clinical content.
Using
the OUM approach, students study in classroom, laboratory, and
clinical settings during the 8-week Introduction to Medicine and then
via distance learning from their own community. Students studying
at a distance identify and study with a mentor, who must be a
registered medical practitioner with at least 4 years post-graduate
experience
(PGY4). Distance students meet with their mentor at least twice
weekly for a total of approximately 2 hrs.
