- Write down your search strategy on paper and
list synonyms and related terms.
- Know the difference between a subject gateway,
directory and search engine.
- Learn when to use which discovery tool.
- Know when to use broad search terms (Directories
and Gateways) and narrow search terms (Search
Engines).
- Use Help screens to find out about specific search
techniques.
- Learn how to use a few discovery tools really
well instead of using a lot badly.
2. Understand the need to critically evaluate resources you find on
the Internet
- Who has written the site and why?
- When was the information first published/last
updated?
- Where is the information from? (Which country/type
of site)
- Know that it is necessary to spend some time reading About/ Aims/
History/ Disclaimer/ Copyright pages before using the content of any
site.
- Realise that health and medical Web sites are
not all written by qualified, unbiased professionals.
- Know that Internet information can be volatile;
it can change or disappear at any moment.
