How to Reference Sites

There is no single standard way of citing electronic resources however each citation should include as much information as possible to ensure users can locate the page/site in an environment in which content is often changing. Look for the following, if available:

  • the name of the author or editor
  • the title of the page (look in the bar at the top of your browser)
  • the title of the site (go to the site's homepage)
  • the date the page was last updated, or the copyright date
  • the date you accessed the page
  • the full internet address (URL) of the page

To assist with the formatting of citations there is a tool available online, the Son of Citation Machine™, that provides a web form to fill in the details of the item (select the type of reference from the panel on the left of the page for any print or electronic information source) and it generates a formatted citation for you to use.
