Admission

Oceania University of Medicine welcomes students from all backgrounds and they are selected without regard to age, gender, race, religion, national origin, or sexual orientation. Understandably, medical students must possess minimum physical, cognitive, and behavioural requirements in order to successfully complete OUM’s curriculum and, ultimately, to practice medicine.  Learn about the minimum academic requirements, the OUM Admissions Test (OUMAT), required documentation and the admissions interview.  Applicants accepted into the OUM program may begin in January or July of each year.

Entry Requirements and Procedures

Students accepted into the OUM Undergraduate MBBS Program may begin in February of each year.

Applicants must have successfully passed their final state or national secondary school examinations achieving a minimum aggregate passing grade of 80 percent (or equivalent) in the following subjects: English, Chemistry or Biology, and Physics or Mathematics. A high level of written and verbal English (IELTS of 7.0 with individual band score of not less than 6.5) is also required for prospective students who do not speak English as their first language.

Applicants who do not have access to standard medical school entrance exams, such as UMAT, ISAT, or MCAT, must sit the Oceania University Medical Admissions Test (OUMAT). If a nationally accepted medical entrance exam is available and commonly used in the applicant’s home country, an acceptable score may be used in lieu of the OUMAT. All other factors being equal, no preference will be given to applicants whether they have taken the OUMAT or other equivalent tests.

Applicants meeting the required criteria will be eligible to sit the OUMAT anytime between August and October for the February intake.

The OUMAT is a two and one-half-hour knowledge and aptitude test consisting of 100 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) in two parts:

Part A tests knowledge and understanding of concepts taken from the following secondary subjects: English, Chemistry, Biology, Physics and Mathematics (70 MCQs).

Part B tests non-verbal reasoning (10 MCQs), logical reasoning and problem solving skills (10 MCQs), and the ability to understand people (10 MCQs).

Applicants will pay a fee of AU$135 to sit for the exam. All applicants will be ranked by the University, and short listed for advancement to the final stage of selection. An OUMAT study guide is available for purchase in Adobe pdf format for a fee of AU$40 and contains 160 practice MCQs, study tips and exam strategies. The final component in the admission process is a semi-structured interview, routinely conducted as a telephone conference call with members of the admissions staff and faculty. The interview focuses on personal qualities and attributes agreed to be essential to both the study and practice of medicine, based on internationally accepted criteria for medical school selection. Interviews are conducted each year in October for January intake and April for the July intake. Successful applicants will be informed by April 30 (July intake) and October 31(January intake).

The application is submitted electronically and additional documents should be sent to:
