Medical School: Clinical & Basic Science Faculty

Casual or consulting contracts are available for clinical & basic science educatorss in the area of curriculum development and teaching. Clinical consultants are required to have a minimum of an MBBS/MD degree and basic science consultants must have a PhD/MBBS/MD. Successful applicants will have at least 2 years teaching experience in a recognized medical school.

Salary: Commensurate with experience.

Medical Faculty and Content Developers

Oceania University of Medicine (OUM), an accredited international medical school, http://www.oum.edu.ws, invites applications from candidates with teaching and/or research experience in any of the basic and/or clinical sciences for its medical education programs. These are remote positions with an attractive salary and flexible schedules. Candidates with a special interest in e-learning opportunities are encouraged to apply. Located in Samoa, OUM offers MD and MBBS degree programs. As a hybrid medical school, OUM delivers its educational curriculum with blended courses offered online with live virtual classroom sessions. This is a remote position and will not require relocation.

Academic Advisors

OUM has established an academic advising program, the ultimate purpose of which is to ensure the success of our students. The academic advisor, in conjunction with the appropriate faculty, will assist the student understand difficult basic science concepts. The academic advisor will also help the student develop short- and long-term strategies for acquiring the fund of knowledge required to successfully complete the pre-clinical curriculum and pass USMLE Step 1 or the AMC exam in Australia.

The portfolio of students for the academic advisor would include 10-15 students at different points in the preclinical curriculum. The ultimate number of students will depend upon the advisor’s availability.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

• Monitor the academic progress of each student in his/her portfolio, and report monthly to the Director of Preclinical Education on each student’s strengths and weaknesses and recommended actions for remedying any weaknesses.
  • Proactively contact enrolled students by telephone or Skype on a weekly basis.
  • Maintain a weekly, detailed log of any and all contact with OUM students, whether initiated by the student or by the advisor. Log should include information about each student’s study activities and any progress being made and milestones reached.
  • Administer a weekly diagnostic test consisting of USMLE-type questions (from USMLE World and other sources) to assess the student’s fund of knowledge. While not part of the student’s grade, the test results would be part of the student’s file and used to document normal progress toward graduation and the student’s readiness for promotion to the next module.
  • Assess student knowledge as applied to material in the current module and serve as a partial summative evaluation of the student’s knowledge in light of other modules taken.
  • Upon receipt of grades, advisor will work with student to identify areas of weakness and further development.
  • Provide time management, academic writing, as well as study and test-taking skills advice.
• Contact students on break (not enrolled in a module) weekly to ascertain readiness to begin next module and to make appropriate assignments to enhance knowledge retention and student readiness for the next module.
• As appropriate, the advisor may interact with the student’s faculty to gain an understanding of the course material being presented to students, to gain insight into the student’s performance, and to discuss any outstanding issues of the student’s performance.
• As appropriate, the advisor may interact with the student’s physician mentor (where allocated) to gain insight into the student’s performance and to reinforce remedies suggested by the advisor to address any gaps in student knowledge. Care must be taken to avoid violating confidentiality of student grades and specific performance issues.
• Students will be required to respond to and work with advisors on their academic performance. Advisors will have input into the Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE).
• Advisors will be required to present progress reports on students along with the time spent on each and will be compensated based on the size of their portfolio.
• The advisor is not an advocate for the student and will neither advise nor represent the student in appeals to instructors or the Student Affairs Committee. The advisor may inform students of the pertinent policies and procedures, but may not provide advice on strategy and tactics for appeals and other such actions. The Student Affairs Committee may ask the advisor to verify any assertions or claims about academic performance made by the student or for an ad hoc opinion regarding the student’s case.
• The advisor’s performance will be evaluated semi-annually, based on student performance on final module grades and USMLE Step 1 results as well as the frequency and quality of contact with students, as demonstrated by student contact records.

Compensation:

• $50/hour of contact per student per week
• Invoices submitted by the last day of the month with student progress reports and enrollment information will be paid on the first day of the following month (roughly 31 days).
